Synthesis gas from oil - removing and recycling entrained carbon

In the process of producing CO and H2 by partial direct oxidation of liquid hydrocarbons in the presence of O2 and steam in a flow reaction zone at an autogenous temp. of 980-1760 degrees C with secondary formation of free carbon, the gaseous effluent from this zone is cooled to a temp. above the dew point of the water therein and contacted with a liquid hydrocarbon, so as to eliminate the entrained C particles without condensing the steam. The resultant current is contacted with the water at 38-260 degrees C to eliminate vaporised hydrocarbons. The C contg. liquid hydrocarbon and the wash-water are used as at least part of the hydrocarbon feed. The C particles produced when the optimum proportion of oxygen is employed are transferred from the effluent gas directly to the oil feed.
