A pigmented paint with a continuous aqueous phase has as binder an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer containing, by wt., 9-20% ethylene, 2-12% of a semi-ester of an α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, or water-soluble salt thereof, and 68-89% of a mixture of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or propionate containing 15- 45% of the ester and 85-55% vinyl chloride. The semi-ester is formed from a. C 1 -C 8 alcohol and is preferably used in the form of its sodium, potassium or ammonium salt. The pigment is lithopone, zinc sulphide, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, antimony oxide, chromium oxide, cobalt/nickel/manganese mixed oxides, lead or strontium chromate, red lead or a phthalocyanine and may be mixed with fillers. In an example are used rutile, talc, heavy spar, dolomite, calcium carbonate, potassium phosphate, ammonia, tributyl phosphate, methyl cellulose, ammonium alginate and a copolymer obtained by the process of Specification 1,139,789.
