Iron having graphite in the vermicular form is obtained by adding 0À03 to 0À1% of rare earth metal to the desulphurized and deoxidized iron; the latter may have been treated with calcium carbide containing up to 10% of calcium fluoride. Alternatively the iron may be treated with a larger amount of rare earth metal so that 0À03 to 0À1% remains after desulphurization and deoxidation; in this case however further treatment is necessary on remelting.
