PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoelectric conversion element narrow in a half-value width of absorption and excellent in color reproduction and an image pickup element (preferably a color image sensor) and to further provide a photoelectric conversion element high in a photoelectric conversion efficiency and excellent in durability and an image pickup element. SOLUTION: The photoelectric conversion element and the image pickup element each includes an organic photoelectric conversion film inserted into at least two electrodes and containing at least a hole-transporting photoelectric conversion film and an electron transportation nature photoelectric conversion film, wherein the organic photoelectric conversion film contains at least the hole-transporting photoelectric conversion film and the electron transportation nature photoelectric conversion film and the hole-transporting photoelectric conversion film and the electron transportation nature photoelectric conversion film have an absorption in a visible region, and the difference of the long wavelength ends of the optical absorption of the both is 50 nm or less.
