PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a mercury-free arc tube in which no foreign matters are enclosed to a sealed chamber section. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the mercury-free arc tube comprises a primary pinch seal process for inserting a first electrode assembly from one end of a glass tube for pinch-sealing the electrode assembly insertion part of the glass tube W; an enclosed object supply process for supplying a prescribed object to be sealed, such as an emissive substance, from the other end of the glass tube W into the tube; a second electrode assembly insertion process for inserting a second electrode assembly A', where a bent section 8a that is pressure-welded to the inside of the glass tube for self-holding is formed at a lead wire 8, from the other end of the glass tube W; and a secondary pinch-sealing process for pinch-sealing the second electrode assembly insertion part of the glass tube W. In the method for manufacturing the mercury-free arc tube, a second electrode assembly insertion process for inserting the second electrode assembly A' upward from the open end of the glass tube W directed downward is made before the process for supplying the enclosed object. Glass pieces and molybdenum pieces shaved by the rubbing of a bent section 8a in the lead wire and the glass tube W fall by dead weight and are discharged to the outside of the glass tube W, thus preventing foreign matters (glass pieces and molybdenum pieces) from being mixed into a sealed chamber section 12.
