PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high density recording having extremely high reliability by preventing unnecessary writing to an adjacent track. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus is provided with a magnetic head having a main magnetic pole, a magnetic recording medium of a discrete type having the prescribed ruggedness structure on a data track and a servo track, and a drive unit main body which rotates the magnetic recording medium in a fixed direction and which can operate so that the magnetic head can be moved in the almost radial direction of the magnetic recording medium. Relation of a parameter specifying the prescribed rugged shape of the data track, a parameter specifying the main magnetic pole, and a skew angle is prescribed by the predetermined numerical expression, specifications of the magnetic recording and reproducing device is set in this range.
