PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reproducing apparatus which reduces memory capacity required for reverse reproduction. SOLUTION: The image reproducing apparatus for reproducing encoded data stored in a main storage unit and obtaining regenerative outputs in reverse chronological sequence, is provided with an analysis means 70 for capturing control data attached to a stream of the encoded data, analyzing the interrelation of a plurality of reference image data, that should be to refer to in decoding and obtaining interrelation information, a buffer unit 20 for temporarily storing the plurality of reference image data, a storage control means 60 which uses the interrelation information obtained by the analysis means to extract the plurality of reference image data from the stream and temporarily store them in the buffer unit, and a reverse reproduction means 50 for processing, according to a decoding procedure, the plurality of reference image data stored in the buffer unit and outputting the decoded regenerative image data in reverse chronological sequence.
