PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely feed a sheet material, even when a friction coefficient of a paper feeding roller reduces and the easy-to-slip sheet material is fed. SOLUTION: This sheet material carrying device has an auxiliary paper feeding roller 45 installed on a rotary shaft 37 for integrally rotating with a pickup roller 21, having a part projecting to the outer peripheral side more than a rotational diameter of the pickup roller 21 and capable of rotatably contacting with an upper part of a supply tray 8, a switching means 40 for switching the auxiliary paper feeding roller 45 to a rotational state and a stopping state, and a CPU 50 for sending a document D into the downstream side, by rotatably contacting the auxiliary paper feeding roller 45 with the document D on the supply tray 8 by the switching means 40, by determining that the document D on the supply tray 8 is not sent out by the pickup roller 21, when a separation part switch 32 does not detect the document D even when predetermined time passes from a start of paper feeding operation of the pickup roller 21.
