PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer capable of early and surely detecting inferiority of carrying of a recording medium. SOLUTION: In this thermal printer, an ink ribbon on which a frame with a different color is arranged is superimposed on a carried rolled paper, and printing is performed by using a thermal head. The thermal printer is equipped with a sensor part 901 for detecting a tip part of the carried rolled paper, a measuring means 909 for measuring the first time from starting carrying the rolled paper accompanied by starting printing of each frame to detecting the tip part, and the second time from starting carrying the rolled paper after the printing of each frame is finished to detecting the tip part, a judging means 910 for judging that carrying of the rolled paper is not normal when the first and second times are not within setting values respectively, and a displaying part 904 for displaying an error message when it is judged that carrying of the rolled paper is not normal.
