PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain light granular slaked lime in a high yield, which is suitable as a soil modifier used for modifying soil for agricultural use, an acidic rain neutralizing agent, a line drawing material, an agent for sterilizing excrements of domestic animals, viruses and bacteria, an agent for neutralizing acidic waste liquids, an agent for treating waste gases or the like. SOLUTION: The light granular slaked lime is obtained by partially slaking coarse particles of quicklime having an average particle diameter of 0.5-11.2 mm and an apparent specific gravity of 0.8-1.3 so that the slaking rate is within a range of 25-85% by subjecting the coarse particles of the quicklime and water to dry reaction for 5 s to 20 min by uniformly spraying water of an amount of 0.7-1.4 times of the theoretical amount of slaking water on the particles. The light granular slaked lime controlled in the apparent specific gravity and the resistance to disintegration in water can be obtained in accordance with the application by using an aqueous solution containing additives such as 1-3C alcohols, sugar alcohols, glycols or salts as water to be used in partial slaking.
