<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader and an image forming apparatus in which the temporary fixing of an optical system can be easily performed. <P>SOLUTION: A copying machine 1 comprises an original reading part 2. The original reading part 2 comprises an optical system 5 for illuminating and scanning an original with light and an optical frame 6 for storing the optical system 5. The optical system 5 includes first and second mirror frames 8, 9 capable of reciprocally moving in a scanning direction X. The second mirror frame 9 is located on a home position, a screw part 21 of a fixing pin 14 is screwed into a fixing screw hole 16 of the optical frame 6 and an engagement part 22 of the fixing pin 14 is engaged with an engagement part 17 of the second mirror frame 9 to regulate the movement of the second mirror frame 9. When the fixing pin 14 is detached and the screw part 21 of the fixing pin 14 is screwed into a fixing screw hole 18 of the optical frame 6, the engagement 22 of the fixing pin 14 can be turned to a state that the engagement part 22 does not interfere with the second mirror frame 9 and the second mirror frame 9 can be moved against the optical frame 6.
