PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus, a recording and reproducing method and a recording and reproducing system for automatically recognizing a user and displaying program information, according to the preference of the user. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 12 photographs the user, and a face detection discrimining section 43 automatically compares photographed data with registered face data to recognize a viewer. The recording and reproducing apparatus selects a prescribed program among programs recorded in an HDD 39, on the basis of preference information of the recognized user and a display apparatus 11 displays information with respect to a recorded program. Further, the recording and reproducing apparatus can also display a recommended program, corresponding to the preference of the user among programs televised at present on the basis of the preference information of the recognized user and program information, such as an EPG stored in a program information input section 34.
