A composite of platinum on alumina (preferably &c.) is treated with an organic chlorinating agent at 300-600 DEG F. and the chlorinated product is heated between 650 DEG F. and 1000 DEG F. in the presence of evolved hydrogen chloride or between 450 DEG F. and 1000 DEG F. in the presence of a flowing stream of added hydrogen chloride. Chlorinating agents exemplified are carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, phosgene or trichloracetyl chloride. |
