PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a histogram dividing a luminance signal into a plurality of signal level regions for performing optimal contrast adjustment. SOLUTION: The video signal processing circuit comprises: a histogram generating means 12 for generating a histogram by dividing a digital Y signal corresponding to a plurality of pixels in one frame unit into a plurality of signal level regions for each fixed signal level range and detecting the ratio of pixels contained in each signal level region in all the pixels; a correction coefficient storage means 13 in which a correction coefficient is set and stored; an arithmetic means 14 for calculating a correction value for a signal level in each signal level region in accordance with the histogram and the correction coefficient and adjusting input/output characteristics of the digital Y signal based on the correction value; and a Y-γcorrection means 11 for performing gamma correction on the digital Y signal in accordance with the input/output characteristics adjusted by the arithmetic means.
