PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a method for controlling printing capable of appropriately controlling delivery of ink drops and printing without staining the upper face of a guide member when an object to be printed in which a cutout exists is printed. SOLUTION: The printer 10 practicing the printing while the object 12 to be printed with the cutout 123 is fed, is equipped with a carrying driving source 25 for discharging or feeding the object 12 to be printed through a pair of rollers 30 and 40, and a delivering element 63a. The printer 10 delivers the ink drops toward the object 12 to be printed from the delivering element 63a, and is equipped with a printing head 62 capable of practicing the printing, a head driving means for providing a delivering force for delivering the ink drops from respective delivering elements 63a, a predicting means 70 for predicting the back end position of forwarding corresponding to the cutout part 123, and a controlling means for stopping driving of the head driving means when the object 12 to be printed reaches an amount of forwarding exceeding the back end position based on the prediction by the predicting means 70 and stopping delivering of the ink drops.
