PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricating oil which exhibits well-balanced performance of saving energy, low evaporation, heat resistance and low temperature characteristics, particularly a lubricating oil for a fluid bearing, a fluid bearing using the same and also to provide a method for lubricating a fluid bearing. SOLUTION: The lubricating oil contains as the main ingredients a compound shown by general formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>O-(A<SP>1</SP>O)-OC-R<SP>3</SP>-CO-(OA<SP>2</SP>)-OR<SP>2</SP>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a 1-20C alkyl group or an aryl group, A<SP>1</SP>O and OA<SP>2</SP>are each independently a mono- or polyoxyalkylene group consisting of one or more 2-4C alkylene group, and R<SP>3</SP>is a 2-15C alkylene group), and the oil has a kinematic viscosity of 5-100 mm<SP>2</SP>/s at 40°C, a total acid value of 5 mg KOH/g or less and a hydroxy value of 20 mg KOH/g or less.
