PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable energy absorption type steering column capable of changing at two stages, the energy absorption load of a driver when a vehicle collides. SOLUTION: Split pieces 20 and 24 to be fixed to the vehicle body are folded toward its rear and fixed thereto, and in one part 22 thereof, a pin hole 29 where a pin 28 is engaged and disengaged is bored, and an actuator 27 to actuate the pin 28 is secured to the vehicle body in the vertical attitude, while split pieces 21 and 23 to be fixed to the column are extended toward the front of the vehicle body to form a hook part 33, and a hook part 37 abutting to the hook part 33 is formed on the column side.
