PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capacitance type obstacle discriminating device for vehicles free from an error in detection of collision with a pedestrian due to rainfall, splashing and the like. SOLUTION: A sensor 6 for detecting change in capacitance generated by collision of a vehicle bumper with an obstacle is installed in non-contact with a bumper cover 2 on a position rearward of the bumper cover 2 so that the change in capacitance caused by moisture adhering on the surface of the bumper cover 2 is not detected to avoid an error in detection of collision against a pedestrian caused by rainfall, splash and the like. In addition, because the bumper cover 2 and an absorber 4 are deformed to cause the pedestrian (a human body) and the sensor 6 to be brought nearly into contact with each other when the collision against a pedestrian occurs, the change in capacitance can be detected with a sensitivity similar to that found in the prior arts, and a judgment on whether or not the obstacle is a pedestrian can be made highly accurately.
