PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forming method to expand the permissible range of the volume of a glass base material to dripping or burr occurring in the outside peripheral part of a molding. SOLUTION: The method of forming the optical device carried out by pressing the glass base material in a heated and softened state with a forming mold to transfer a side surface part with an optically functional surface, cooling and taking out from the mold has a process of changing the thickness of the optical device to be formed within the permissible range corresponding to the volume of the glass base material to regulate the shape of the non-contact part with the forming mold in the outer peripheral part of the optical device after formed to a permissible range.
