The mechanical door arrester for motor vehicle doors consists of a slide (3) and a braking or fixing device (1,2,4-8). With opening of the door the slide runs through the braking or fixing device and the latter exerts on the slide an accurately definable braking action. The slide is constructed in such a way that its cross section can be variably selected for different opening ranges, consequently different braking and fixing forces can be achieved.
