PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method in which a proof capable of reproducing dot gain accurately can be created with high measurement accuracy of modulus of dot area when the area gray scale image of a printed matter is employed in creation of the proof. SOLUTION: In the area gray scale image forming method for forming a second area gray scale image from a first area gray scale image which is an aggregate of binary data for each pixel, detection of a boundary pixel located at the dot boundary of a first image and detection of positional relation between the boundary pixel and the dot are carried out, a mask is selected for each boundary pixel depending on the positional relation, modulus of partial area being occupied by a dot in the mask is operated, and the binary data of boundary pixel is altered based on the modulus of partial area thus forming a second image. The mask is selected from two kinds or more of mask where each boundary pixel deviates from the center of mask.
