PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording method that does not form an area which cannot be registered as a recordable area in the index area, after erasing data, and that effectively uses the recording area on a recording medium. SOLUTION: This method converts the minimum data capacity of the recordable area which can be registered in the index information into the minimum recording time, based on a compression system (encode mode) (Step S13), and also converts the data capacity of the recordable area on the recording medium into the recordable time, based on the compression system (Step S14); then searches for a recordable area which is larger than the whole recording time of the data to record and has the remaining recordable time that will not be shorter than the minimum recording time (Step S15), and records the data in the recordable area thus obtained (Step S16).
