PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that a crack or wear occurs in sliding faces and it is difficult to form stable lubricating layers on the sliding faces. SOLUTION: A sliding member has the sliding faces 2a, 3a and 4a mainly composed of an aluminum oxide crystal phase and a glass phase. The occupied area rate of the glass phase existing in each sliding face 2a, 3a and 4a is 30-75%, and the occupied area rate of pores existing in the sliding faces 2a, 3a and 4a is 50% or less. Thus, the sliding faces 2a, 3a and 4a are hardly damaged and the peeling of the lubricating layers is suppressed. The lubricating layers mainly composed of the glass phases are formed on the sliding faces 2a, 3a and 4a in the process of usage.
