PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect noises caused in an image due to dust existing on an original platen. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes: three line sensors arranged at an interval in the subscanning direction and scanning an original in the subscanning direction; the original platen provided between the original and the three line sensors; a moving means for moving the original platen; a noise detection processing section for detecting a noise pixel from a plurality of data output from the three line sensors; an order determining section 312 for determining the order of noise detection depending on the arranged number of the three line sensors and the moving direction of the original platen; a noise length calculation section 314 for predicting the length of noise in the subscanning direction on the basis of the number of noise pixels continuing in the main scanning direction, the transport speed of the original, the moving speed of the original platen, and the arrangement interval of the three line sensors; and an effective noise pixel output section 315 for validating the noise pixel detected from the data output from the line sensor whose order is later for the noise length predicted after the noise pixel is detected from the data output from the line sensor whose order is early.
