PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bright and high-contrast projection type display device using a projection lens having eccentricity diaphragm. SOLUTION: The projection type display device mainly has a discharge lamp 10, a light guide means 13, a relay lens system 14, a spatial light modulation element 17 and the projection lens 18. The projection lens 18 has a diaphragm 18a of oval aperture decentered to a light axis and the light guide means 13 has an incident end and an exiting end in the different shapes. Since anisotropy is provided to an exiting angle of light to be emitted from the light guide means 13 and illumination light matched to the diaphragm 18a of the oval aperture is supplied, use efficiency of light is enhanced and the bright projection type display device is achieved.
