PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an Al-based composite member produced by plasma electrolytic oxidation and whose surface is extremely smooth, and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: In the Al-based composite member, the surface layer part of a base material composed of Al or an Al alloy is composed of a plasma electrolytic oxide film withα-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>as a whole, and the surface roughness of the plasma electrolytic oxide film is≤1.0μm by Ra value prescribed by JIS B0601.
