PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which impurities remaining in sponge titanium after the completion of reducing reaction can be separated and removed in a shorter time than heretofore without increasing costs. SOLUTION: Titanium tetrachloride is reduced with molten magnesium in a vessel to form the sponge titanium. This vessel is depressurized while introducing heated argon gas into the sponge titanium. By this method, the impurities remaining in the sponge titanium can be subjected to vacuum separation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
