PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently separate only microorganisms from a large amount of a liquid containing the microorganisms and particles except the microorganisms, and to measure the microorganisms. SOLUTION: This method for separating the microorganisms comprises making a liquid containing the microorganisms and the particles except the microorganisms flow in a trapping cell 1 for restraining only the microorganisms, irradiating the liquid with focused light for restraining only the microorganisms to restrain the microorganisms in the trapping cell 1, turning a flowing liquid-switching valve 6 to make a microorganism-free liquid flow in the same passage, switching off the restraining light to float the microorganisms in the microorganisms-free liquid, and then discharging and recovering the microorganisms-floated liquid. Thereby, the microorganisms can be separated from the microorganisms-containing liquid and transferred to the different liquid, and the restrained microorganisms can be measured.
