1,272,984. Polyurethane/unsaturated polyester polymeric products. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 July, 1970 [21 Aug., 1969; 11 May, 1970], Nos. 41844/69 and 22667/70. Headings C3P and C3R. A polymeric product is formed from a homogenous composition comprising: (a) 5 to 95% by weight of the precursors of a linear polyurethane comprising at least one diisocyanate and at least one difunctional compound free from ethylenic unsaturation and containing two groups reactive with isocyanate groups, each unit derived from the difunctional compound in the polymeric product providing an average of not more than 35 in-chain atoms in the macromolecular chains of said product, and (b) 95 to 5% by weight of the precursors of a cured polyester resin comprising: (i) at least one ethylenically unsaturated polyester containing in each molecule at least two groups reactive with isocyanate groups, and (ii) at least one monomer copolymerizable with the ethylenically unsaturated groups in the polyester, the polymeric product being formed by reaction of the precursors of the linear polyurethane together and with the ethylenically unsaturated polyester and by copolymerization of the monomer with the ethylenically unsaturated groups in the polyester. In the examples, the products are formed from 4: 4<SP>1</SP> diphenylmethane diisocyanate, oxypropylated bisphenol A, poly-(propylene glycol), poly-(ethylene glycol), condensate of 1,2-propylene glycol and adipic acid, unsaturated polyesters prepared from fumaric acid, phthalic acid and propylene glycol, styrene, vinyl toluene, propylene glycol, toluene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, 4: 4<SP>1</SP> - dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate, diethylene glycol, 1: 3-cyclohexane diol, diallyl phthalate and methyl methacrylate in the presence of ditertiary butyl peroxide, dibutyl tin dilaurate, cyclohexanone peroxide, cobalt soap, tertiary butyl peroctoate, tertiary butyl perbenzoate, hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide and tertiary butyl catechol. Glass fibre mats and rovings, carbon fibres, poly-(ethylene terephthalate) fibres and P.T.F.E. coated glass cloth may be incorporated. |
