A disposable, screw-on, integral housing filter for the oil circuit of an I.C. engine comprises a combined anti-drain, non-return valve and by-pass valve 20 and an annular, pleated filter element 7 of resin-impregnated paper, which is internally supported by an externally grooved, plastics support tube 30 (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown). Oil normally flows from inlets 16, depressing flange 21 of the valve, inwards through element 7, along the grooves in tube 30, through apertures 32 in the end of the tube and out through outlet 11. When element 7 clogs or when the oil is cold, sufficient pressure is developed to depress tubular section 24 of the valve inwards, enabling oil to by-pass the element 7. The upper end of tube 30 is castellated, and flange 38 thereon carries lugs 39 to limit downward depression of flange 21, these features defining the by-pass channel to the outer face of section 24. The valve 20 is rubber or plastics and is illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). Tube 30 and element 7 are urged into sealing contact with valve 20 and flange 38 by combined end cap and spring 40. Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) illustrate alternative constructions of the support tube and element end closure. Element 7 may have the ends of individual pleats sealed - and has spacing dimples and ridges 8, 9 therebetween.
