PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal detector having a simple structure, a small size, a comparatively inexpensive price and a small power consumption, and mountable easily on a conventional manufacturing line. SOLUTION: This metal detector 10 is equipped with a detection part 30 having an MI sensor element 34 disposed near a passing inspection object 70, the second magnetometric sensor element 35 disposed on a separate position, a magnetic detection sensor 31 with two built-in MI sensors 34, 35, and a sensor box 37 wherein a plurality of magnetic detection sensors are stored in a line, and with a magnetizing device 40 for magnetizing beforehand a metal of the inspection object 70, a moving device 20 for moving the inspection object 70 in the passing state near the magnetizing device 40 and the detection part, a control board 51 equipped with a control part 50, and a frame 24 for supporting each part. The control part 50 calculates the difference between an output from the MI sensor element 34 of each magnetic detection sensor 31 and an output from the MI sensor element 35, and outputs a detection alarm to a detection lamp 52 when a difference value exceeds a prescribed threshold.
