PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To securely start an engine without installing a start-dedicated electric oil pump when a hydraulic variable valve mechanism is adopted. SOLUTION: An auxiliary arm 18 capable of pushing down a valve in place of a slave piston is installed adjacent to a rocker arm 10 parallel with each other. A lock pin 20 having the same length as a pit depth is disappearably stored in a pit 19 recessed in the side face of the auxiliary arm 18. An energizing force by a return spring 21 (resilient body) is applied to the lock pin in its projecting direction. A fitting hole 22 is formed in the side face of the rocker arm 10 so that it can accept the lock pin 20. When a part of the lock pin 20 is inserted into the fitting hole 22 in a plugged state, it is pushed into the deepest part of the fitting hole 22, a lock release piston 23 is slidably stored in the fitting hole 22, and an oil passage 24 for locking in which a hydraulic pressure occurs after the engine is started is connected to the deepest part of the fitting hole 22.
