PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical pencil which can easily pay out not only an in-use lead but also a following lead. SOLUTION: In this mechanical pencil, a ball chuck mechanism, which inhibits the retreat of the lead by a wedge action while allowing the advance of the lead, is arranged inside a barrel, and a sliding member for lightly holding the lead is arranged ahead of the ball chuck mechanism in such a manner as to be movable forward and backward. A push-action member for operating the sliding member is arranged ahead of the barrel, and an inclined plate for operating the ball chuck mechanism is arranged in the rear of the ball chuck mechanism and swung by the push-action member.
