PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent rolling when a shield machine, the overall length of which is greater in dimension than an inside diameter of a tunnel, is started from the inside of the existing tunnel. SOLUTION: In this starting method, the shield machine 1 is axially split into a plurality of pieces, and started by excavating through a wall to be excavated, while the respective split pieces 3a-3b and 4a-4d are carried into the existing tunnel 2 and connected together. The split piece 3b is placed on a base 26; a metal fitting 27, which is attached to an outer peripheral part of the split piece 3b, abuts on a guide 28 which is provided on the base 26, so that the split piece 3b can be fixed to the base 26 in an axially movable and circumferentially rotatable manner; in this state, the split piece 3b and the base 26 are conveyed to positions to face the wall 21 of the existing tunnel 2; and the split piece 3b is advanced in an axial direction with respect to the base 26. In that case, the metal fitting 27 is brought into sliding contact with the guide 28, so that the rolling of the split piece 3b can be prevented, and a starting hood 16, which is attached to the wall 21 after the removal of the metal fitting 27 of the split piece 3b, is passed.
