A sensor network comprises a plurality of sensing nodes distributed across a sensor field. Clusters of sensing nodes can be formed to reduce traffic and improve longevity of the network. Clusters are formed by a management entity, based on reports from the full set of sensing nodes. Within each cluster, a restricted number of sensing nodes reports a measurement to a remote node. The number of active nodes at any time is chosen to satisfy a required measurement resolution or spatial density. In another aspect, each sensing node measures a parameter and transmits a measurement during a temporal response interval. A processing function determines a characteristic of the sensor field based on the measured parameters and the temporal response interval of the sensing nodes is dependent on the characteristic of the sensor field. In another aspect, a sensor network service server comprises an interface which processes the measurement data, and an interface for providing processed measurement data to external clients.
|
