[Also in Division F2] In a pierce nut-panel assembly the nut 10 is provided with a polygonal pilot portion 16 having grooves 24 in at least two of its sides and the panel 60 is deformed around the pilot portion such that it extends upwardly from the top surface 18 of the main portion of the nut body along the inner wall of the groove and thence upwardly around the shoulder 26 formed in the pilot portion above the groove. A button die 40 having an opening 42 which has a lateral dimension X which is smaller than the lateral dimension P of the upper face of the pilot 16 is used to swage and deform a portion of the nut pilot towards the face of the nut body during the manufacture of the assembly. In a modification (Figs. 7-10, not shown) the pierce nut is provided with grooves on all four sides of the pilot portion. |
