A pneumatic tyre tread includes a plurality of zig-zag slots 20 each slot comprising a radially outer portion 21 and a radially inner part 22 consisting of a series of longitudinally spaced slot segments 42, 44 having an inclination with respect to either the tread surface or a perpen dicular to the tread surface, longitudinally spaced parts of the second portion lying on alternate sides of a plane perpendicular to the tread surface and passing through the first portion. The slot segments may have a triangular or rectangular surface when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the segments (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). Each slot segment may be bent to include two longitudinal planes (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Further, each slot segment may be substantially S- or V-shaped as viewed in the radial direction of the tyre (Figs. 8, 9, 10, not shown).
