Polyolefin powders are prepared by a process which comprises polymerizing a C 2-4α-olefin with a catalyst comprising a compound of a Group IV, V or VI transition metal in an oxidation state lower than the maximum and an organo compound of a Group Ia, IIa or IIIb metal, the catalyst being applied to a finely divided polyolefin support in the form of substantially lenticular or spherical particles, and recovering a finely divided, free flowing product of average particle size substantially larger than that of the finely divided support. The catalyst may be prepared by reducing a transition metal compound with an organometallic compound in the presence of the support, and activating the product with further organometallic compound. The support may be powdered polyethylene or polypropylene. The polymerization may be effected in a liquid hydrocarbon diluent, or in the gaseous phase in a fluidized bed. In examples a mixture of vanadyl trichloride and n-propyl titanate is reduced with diethyl aluminium chloride in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of polyethylene powder and the product (1) used with aluminium triethyl to polymerize ethylene in an aliphatic hydrocarbon diluent in the presence of hydrogen and (2) used with aluminium triisobutyl for the polymerization of ethylene in a fluidized bed.
