PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially favorably producing high-purity pentafluoroethane and a method for producing hexafluoroethane from the obtained pentafluoroethane, and to provide an application of the pentafluoroethane. SOLUTION: The method for producing pentafluoroethane comprises (1) a step for producing crude pentafluoroethane containing impurities by fluoridation of tetracloroethane and (2) a step for contacting the impurity-containing crude pentafluoroethane with oxygen and/or an oxygen-containing compound in the presence of a catalyst.
