Tagging or labelling data on a medium

Apparatus for writing data 100 has a non-volatile memory 116 for storing an identifier 118. Data that is written by the apparatus to a loaded storage medium 104 is tagged using the identifier 118. This facilitates the identification of the tape drive apparatus 100 that has written the data onto the storage medium 104 such as for the purpose of failure analysis. Also claimed is apparatus for writing data to a storage medium comprising storage means that may store a unique identification of the apparatus, means for labelling the data with the unique identifier and means for writing the labelled data onto the storage medium.
