Face detection is executed only for an image imaged according to predetermined arbitrary focal information. In this face detection, a personal face is detected according to a relative value of a statistical amount in a plurality of characteristic regions generated by convexes/concaves and organs of the personal face. Accordingly, even when the face of the image used for face detection is unclear, it is possible to obtain a statistical amount in a certain region and to detect such a face. Consequently, it is possible to rapidly detect a main object as a focusing object without performing focal control in the stage of preliminary imaging in the imaging device.
