1276959 Welding by fusion NIPPON KOKAN KK 13 Aug 1970 [14 Aug 1969] 39012/70 Heading B3R Automatic welding apparatus for welding a web workpiece A to a flange workpiece A<SP>1</SP> includes at least one welding device having one or more torches 27 directed towards a welding region, and first and second drive means for urging the torches respectively in horizontal and vertical directions towards the workpieces, and transmitting means in the form of a roller 23 for pressing against the workpieces. The apparatus, which is for welding joints between elongate members A, A<SP>1</SP> to form T, L, H or I beams, comprises a welding head including torches 27 guided along the joint by a roller 23 on arm 24. The arm 24 and welding head are supported on a plate 22 which can pivot about the horizontal axis of a pin 21 under the influence of a fluid ram 29 which acts between the plate 22 and a carriage 15. The latter is itself pivotable about the vertical axis of a pin 16 under the influence of a fluid ram 18 which acts between the carriage 15 and a fixed column 14. The apparatus includes a pair of arrangements (H, H<SP>1</SP>) as aforedescribed, positioned respectively to one side of the path of movement of a beam being welded (Fig. 1, not shown). The apparatus also includes four support columns (1), a front and rear transverse girder (2), and a longitudinal girder (3) (Fig. 2, not shown). Each girder (2) supports dependant arms (5) each of which mounts a roller (4) for engagement with the web A of the beam. Similarly, an arm (7) dependant from girder (3) mounts rollers (6). Pressure cylinders (8) press rollers (10) against the upper edge of the web A. The beam support 11 includes motor-driven rollers (12) for feeding the beam. |
