Non-woven fabrics are made on a machine comprising a guide means for supporting and guiding a series of thread guides 18 along an endless serpentine path, means for advancing the guide means (and thus the sepentine path) along a closed path, and a means for restraining the series of thread guides 18 against movement in the closed path whilst permitting relative movement of the thread guides relative to the serpentine path. The movement of the paths results in reciprocation of the thread guides with respect to the annular path. There are also a bobbin carrier 19 to supply threads 21 to the guides 18 and a pair of parallel rollers positioned to receive the threads after they have left the guides .18. As shown, the serpentine path comprises a plurality of segments 7 mounted on a set of parallel slats 1 which are advanced around the closed path by a chain 2 fastened to their ends. The thread guides 18 are mounted on a chain 10 and the means retraining movement of the thread guides may be bars 14, 17 as shown, or driven sprockets mounted at the ends of the slats (see Fig. 6, not shown). In alternative embodiments the chain 10 may be replaced by a flexible device, and the chain may be moved in a serpentine path by sprockets mounted on cylinder or large radius. An additional stationary bobbin carrier (26), see Fig. 7 not shown may be provided to lead threads across the others so as to form triangular meshes. The non-woven fabric formed may be bonded by adhesive supplied from roll 23 or by a sheet of thermoplastic material applied to the sheet and heated and pressed thereto. In the latter embodiment, the roller 23 carries an endless belt (31) which carries perpendicular pins to receive the threads. The non-woven fabric may also be used to reinforce cellulose padding. |
