A tampon applicator barrel (16) including a cardboard tube having a first end (20) and a second end (22) and at least one gripping structure (32) defined from the cardboard tube proximate the second end (22) is provided. The cardboard tube (16) has a wall thickness of between about 0.0 15 and about 0.020 inches, while the gripping structure has a height of upto about 0.035 inches.
