PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve light distribution characteristics, by showing arc width to be large during lighting, in a condition of substantially not containing mercury in a discharge space. SOLUTION: Metallic halide and rare gas and a discharge medium not substantially containing mercury are sealed in the discharge space 12 of a translucent airtight vessel 1, having an arc tube part 11 forming the discharge space 12 and sealing parts 131, 132 formed at ends of the arc tube part 11. Metal foils 21, 22 are sealed in the sealing parts 131, 132, whose one ends are arranged oppositely in the discharge space 12 maintaining a desired distance between electrodes and a pair of electrodes 31, 32 connected to one ends of the metal foils 21, 22 are sealed in the other ends.
