PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode material with sulfur having a large capacity density and serving as an active material, which does not contain a large quantity of electric conduction adjuvant, i.e., a positive electrode material for a high energy density battery. SOLUTION: The battery positive electrode material is composed of a complex of sulfur and/or a sulfur compound having a S-S bonding, and an electrically conductive material, wherein the complex comprises complex fine particle layers which are formed by making fine particles of the electrically conductive material bite into particles of sulfur and/or the sulfur compound having the S-S bonding. In the manufacturing method for the battery positive electrode material of the invention, a mechano-fusion of the particles of sulfur and/or the sulfur compound as one of a materials, and the fine particles of the electrically conductive material as another of the materials is carried out to obtain the complex substance having the complex fine particle layers which are formed by making the the fine particles gnaw onto the particles.
