PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white light source having light emission characteristics suitable for a data projector etc. without using mercury. SOLUTION: In this metal halide lamp, mercury is not contained in a discharge space, xenon gas which is at least 3 atmospheres at room temperature and metallic halide consisting at least of indium iodide are sealed, and a relation of (P/V)(X/V)<SP>0.2</SP>>3.0 is satisfied, where V (mm<SP>3</SP>) is the volume of the discharge space, P (W) is an electrode applied to an arc tube, and X (μg) is the weight of indium iodide. Thereby, a continuous emission spectrum over the whole range of visible wavelength by indium is generated, and the mercury free metal halide lamp serving as the excellent white light source is obtained.
