PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide steel for induction hardening suitable as the stock for parts such as a hub unit and a constant velocity joint. SOLUTION: The steel for induction hardening has a composition comprising 0.45 to 0.60% C, 0.4 to 0.9% Si, 0.2 to 1.0% Mn, 0.03 to 0.6% Cr, 0.02 to 0.15% V, 0.003 to 0.05% S, 0.012 to 0.05% Al and 0.007 to 0.025% N, further comprising one or two kinds selected from 0.04 to 0.2% Cu and 0.003 to 0.05% Sn, further comprising one or two kinds selected from 0.001 to 0.01% Sb and 0.001 to 0.01% As, further comprising 0 to 0.2% Ni in the case Cu is not comprised and comprising Ni:(1/2)×the Cu content to 0.2% in the case Cu is comprised, and the balance Fe with impurities. In the impurities, Ti≤0.005%, P≤0.03% and O≤0.0015% are satisfied, and also, Al×äN-(14/48)×Ti}≥1.5×10<SP>-4</SP>, and N-(14/27)×Al-(14/48)×Ti-(14/51)×V≤-0.005 are satisfied.
