1284623 Cultivating bacteria on gaseous hydrocarbons NIPPON OIL CO Ltd 16 Sept 1970 [16 Sept 1969] 44246/70 Heading C6F A method of preparing pretein-containing cells involves inoculating a culture medium comprising a nitrogen source and a carbon source which comprises a normally gaseous saturated hydrocarbon having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, with one of the following micro-organisms: Corynebacterium fujiokense (ATCC 21496) Nocardia neoopaca(ATCC 21499) Arthrobacter rubellus (ATCC 21495) Arthrobacter petroleophagus (ATCC 21494) culturing the micro-organism cells under aerobic conditions, separating the cells from the culture medium and (optionally) freeze-drying or spraydrying them. The carbon source may consist of at least 50 per cent by weight of ethane, propane and/or n-butane and a minor amount of other hydrocarbons such as olefins and iso-paraffins. The C 4 fraction remaining after recovering ethylene and butadiene from a cracked product of naphtha or a gaseous mixture of liquefied petroleum gas consisting predominantly of propane and butane may be employed.
