The method involves entering a security code on an electronic motor vehicle key (100) and/or an access authorization device by a user. Doors of the vehicle are unlocked and/or an anti-theft device is released after a successful verification of the entered code. A control unit sends a random number and a coded lock password to the key, where the password is decoded in the key using the number and is verified.
